Lets give Mastercam a try in VR - Virtual Reality!
Virtual Reality, the tech we've all heard so much about over the last decade but yet it still hasn't really made an impact in the productivity department. It has its place in gaming and entertainment, but what about doing serious work in VR? Are we close yet?
I think we are getting close but it isn't there yet. Mind you, I'm not using a high-end setup in this video. I'm using an Oculus Quest 2, which lists for about $300 USD. Sure, $300 isn't cheap but compared to other units this is considered budget VR...you don't even need a super fancy computer to run this unit. That being said, the visual is not crystal clear everywhere. Directly in you vision, yes it looks pretty good. Anything off to the side, you'll have to turn your head to get it in focus. I'm mainly referring to text. Objects and icons are really good.
The headset itself, although this is light, it would be tough to wear for an 8 hour day.
On the positive side, this unit has no wires attached to it, so I am free to roam the room while programming. Also, interacting with models is very cool.
I would still put VR in the emerging tech category, but it is very close to being a tool you might be using on the daily. A couple more years of improved headsets, a couple more years of more companies getting on board, a couple more years of improved software...its close, not yet, but its close.
