Vernier Scales Don't Have To Be Scary!

8/29/25 1:51 PM / by camInstructor Mike

Reading a vernier scale isn't as hard as it looks!Use this one tip to easily read them!

In the video, I explain how a vernier scale works and provide a tip on how to easily read a vernier scale....its very simple if you know this little trick!

I go through making a vernier which uses the n-1 difference between vernier scale and main scale, using this you can create a scale of any increment.

As much as this is an old technology that has been replaced by dial and digital displays, it is still and useful technology and a right of passage for any machinist!

If you are interested in the file from the video, you can complete this for the download. The file contains a few different vernier scales and a solid model of a vernier. You can manipulate these scales in Mastercam using Transform>Translate. You can experiment with creating your own scales as well.
